2006 NORTH QLD MARBLEHEAD
CHAMPIONSHIP REPORT |
|
Blue skies and light winds greeted
14 starters for the 2006 North Queensland Marblehead Championship at Lake
Curralea in Townsville on the weekend of 9/10th September. The last
minute withdrawal of Greg Torpy robbed the locals of the experience of sailing
and talking to the National Champ. However, the appearance of two of our recent
World Championship skippers was great value and they showed everyone the way it
should be done.
Saturday morning gave us 5 to 10
knot westerly breeze, unusual for the lake, and setting a course was difficult
because of 15 to 20 degree wind shifts with 15 to 20 knot “bullets”. By 11
o’clock the wind shifted to SW necessitating another course change. After lunch
it again changed to settle from the SE remaining steady at top “A” rig
conditions for the rest of the day.
Greg Willis and Bill Wright vied
for the lead all day and after 16 races and two discards were separated by only
two points, Bill leading 22/24. Other skippers sailing consistently were Col
Cameron and James Finch from Mackay Club and Tim Arland from the Whitsundays.
Many of the skippers and their partners relaxed over a quiet meal and a drink at
one of the local watering holes on Saturday night, no doubt discussing the day’s
racing and their chances for Sunday.
Sunday gave us similar conditions
to Saturday with westerly wind which held steady throughout the day. No course
changes were necessary and only “A” rigs required. Bill and Greg continued their
nip and tuck battle all day with Bill holding on to win the event 51/53. Both
skippers scored a net 29 points on the day. Col pulled away from James and Tim
with Tim improving his position to fourth overall.
PRO for the regatta was Glenn
Dawson from the Townsville Club. Glenn did a great job with his diplomatic
handling of the sometimes testy group. Thanks to Glenn and his crew of willing
helpers who combined to make it a very successful weekend.
