Race Summary |
The
racing started off with 14 boats nominated and they all were event
checked and registered with racing under way at 10:30 am. The wind was
very finicky on Saturday due to some storm cells that kept coming in and
raining. Greg Torpy set the early pace as he showed excellent speed and
acceleration while the rest tried to understand the way the wind shifts
would work in their favour. Ian Ashe from Townsville and Bill Wright
from Brisbane were having a lively contest for the minor places, while
the rest of the fleet settled into personal battles with their peers. As
the Race Officer, it was a real pleasure to see the penalties being done
and skippers actually apologizing to each other over infringements.
There were no major disputes which was unusual as the tricky conditions
sometimes frustrates the skippers and they tend to mouth off. After 14
races on the first day, Greg Torpy held a 9 point advantage over Ian
Ashe and Bill Wright, everyone then met at the Shamrock Hotel for a meal
and a few drinks while being entertained by Sergio on the piano, a local
Mackay Model Mariners member.
Sunday was a better day as the rain
squalls had disappeared and a light to moderate breeze blew reasonably
steady for the day, allowing the skippers to improve their boat speed and
tactics. Unfortunately Alan Kemp from Townsville had to retire as his NRW 5
sustained severe damage to the fin box and split causing the boat to fill,
but that did not upset Greg Torpy who kept on winning and by the end of the
day had such a huge points advantage that he could of stopped sailing at
lunch time. The best all-round improver was Tim Parker from the Whitsunday
club who settled down and was able to finish regularly in the top five. Tim
Arland from the Whitsunday also improved and started to give Bill Wright and
Ian Ashe a scare for the minor placing's.
At the end of 28 races everyone agreed
that they had enough and so the final results were tallied and the winner
was Greg Torpy on 29 points, Ian Ashe on 74.3 points, Tim Arland on 100 pts
followed by Bill Wright on 105 pts. The sailing was excellent, the venue
was great and everyone had a great time. A special thankyou to Greg & Bill
for making the long trip north, and to the Mackay Model Mariners volunteers
who helped with the scoring, buoy observing, the lunch orders, which all
went towards making this event a huge success.
