QUEENSLAND MICRO MAGIC REGATTA

The Micro magic a small but effective racing yacht was introduced to Australia late last year and to date 66 Sail Nos have been registered with boats sailing in most states and good numbers in Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.

Victoria held their first Regatta /Fun day for the class last month and last weekend it was Queensland’s turn with sailing at two locations:  Saturday Emerald Lakes and Sunday at Carbrook. A total of ten boats entered but only nine fronted the starter.

The weather forecast looked a bit ordinary with a strong wind warning out but the organiser Malcolm must have been doing something right as the strong wind conditions did not eventuate with most carrying A rigs for both days.

On Saturday only six fronted but close racing was had particularly at the front where Jon Wilson and Ben Leigh-Smith  almost match raced at the front with neither really getting the upper hand. At the end of racing Saturday it was Jon by a point with Victorian (we won’t hold that against him) David Walters in third.

During the luncheon break spectators (mainly club IOM sailors) drew for boats and an invitation race was conducted. After a log jam at the top mark the race was eventually completed with laughs all around. Who won ? - not sure but I think Micro Magic was the winner.

The circus moved on to Carbrook on Sunday and found another three starters.

Again picture perfect weather, (Malcolm again J) and all in A rig.

Not a lot of change in the action with Jon and Ben at it again with the lead fluctuating all day and it was going to come down to the wire. Allan Walker sailing a borrowed boat showed a bit of form once he got the hang of things and David and Graeme Turk had their own battle all day to see who would pick up the minor placing.

Pauline Walters a relative newcomer to the sport but with more MM time than most of us improved during the event and after lowering David’s colours was told that if she kept that up she could recover her own boat in future. Competition in the Walters camp!!!!

In the end it was a tie for first with Jon taking the win on count-back from Ben with David holding out for third.

As on Saturday spectators were given the opportunity to try the class in a race with all boats available .... in this case I know the winner .........  Les Brown and MICRO MAGIC

Thanks go to the Paradise and Brisbane Club’s for hosting the event and Malcolm and Shirley, (Radio Yacht Supplies Australia), for sponsoring the weekend.

Both Paradise and Brisbane Clubs have indicated that they will schedule sailing for the Micro Magic on a regular basis with the Class to go forward from here. (2170 MM’s registered in Holland ............ can Australia match that?)
