DAC Results, Scratch Racing, Thu 20th August 2026

15 sailors gathered round on a warm and sunny day with a forecasted NNE breeze. If only that was to be!

In anticipation, Graham Brown set a course early on, however the fickle wind gods teased him and so he needed to turn the course slightly to meet the increasing NW breeze. Thanks Graham – your patience is appreciated.

We welcomed Graham Watson (visiting from NZ) to the challenges of sailing at Dobroyd and the return of Karen and Bruce Patterson from their overseas travels.

Even with the breeze averaging only around 4 – 6 knots throughout our racing and all boats carrying “A” sails, the fleet set a new record and completed fifteen races! Just as there were many races there were also many course changes – Red/Blue; Blue/Red; Red/Blue and so on could be heard being called across the ramp prior to just about every start. The downwind finishes also made for some close tactical sailing with some races being as close as our handicap events.

Our regular RO, Mick Costa was heard to protest that he had “writer’s cramp” and was thankful that the finishing sheet only had 15 columns for results – otherwise we might all still be on the deck!!

The old saying “Win the start and the race is yours!” proved not so true with many boats having terrific starts only to strike trouble at the top marks and lose valuable ground – but this is all part of sailing RC Lasers!

Phil Stevenson had a great day on the water scoring 6 wins and 5 seconds with his worst discard being an 8th What this sailor wouldn’t give to have that sort of consistency!!

Other good performers were Martin Therle with 3 wins, Graham Brown and John Hickey with 2 wins each and Lew Verdon and our visiting kiwi Graham Watson with a well-deserved win each as well. Following on was a myriad of placegetters from across the fleet.

Well done everyone!

Our next sail day is Thursday 27th August for a Scratch Event.
