Dobroyd RC Lasers 20240523

The day began as a beautiful sun-drenched, autumn day with a promising very light breeze from the north-west (Yes, we avoided a breeze from the south, most of the time). Occasionally we’d feel puffs from the south around the clubhouse, but we managed to stay on the same course, although slightly adjusted by Graham early on. The western end of the deck joked that we should set a circle of buoys so we could adjust the course for the inevitable changes in the light breeze.

The course was set directly in front of the deck, so vision was excellent, until the glare on the water lined up with the first rounding mark, which caused some havoc. Well, we’re all in the same boat, so to speak. ‘A’ sails were the only choice of sail for the day.

Stephen Deane peaked early with a win in the practice race. He also mentored our newer members, Tom Dwan and Jonathon Stone, with Tom participating in the racing. When starting out with an RC Laser, no matter how much sailing we have done in the past assistance from fellow members is always very welcome. Thanks Stephen.

Fortunately, after getting through the practice race, we managed to time some of the racing with the onset of the light breeze and the between race glassiness of the water. Maybe the calls of ‘Let’s start while there’s a breeze’ helped. All races had some breeze at some point, but the fleet would then bunch up in the lulls and annoyingly sometimes around the marks.

After the completion of 6 races the winner on the day was Graham Brown with a very strong showing of 5 wins out of 6 races and 5 points. Maybe it pays to arrive early Graham.

Phil Stevenson was second with one win and the rest 2nd and 3rd places on 10 points. Well done to Geoff Lucas in third on 21 points. Only one point separated Robin Tickner 24 and Bruce Paterson 25 for 4th and 5th respectively.

An enjoyable and again, challenging day of racing. I’m always reminded of the RC Laser promo of ‘Easy to sail, a challenge to race’. You bet!
