DAC Results, Scratch Racing, Thu 29th August 2024

Yesterday almost seemed like Summer for seventeen DAC Sailors.
The forecast was close to the mark with a Westerly which varied greatly in strength from 8 up to 27 Km/Hr., (5 to 14 Knots). The peak temperature almost nudged 24oC.
We all chose “B” sails which were needed in the quiet patches, the odd “C” was not used for long.
The water had that ideal Summer look about it and was nice and flat.
Our top three from the recent State Championship were once again battling it out. Phil Stevenson had 3 wins and all finishes in the top four. A score of 16 points gave Phil first place for the day’s racing. Peter Burton seemed to be the one with a target on his back with a fair bit of clobbering. Peter still managed 2 wins and 2 places to score 19 points and second overall. Graham Brown christened a new “B” sail which needed some blooding in. Once in tune, Graham also won 2 races and 2 places to score 23.5 points and finish in third place.
Martin Thearle continues to score well, a win and 2 places was a good result in a large fleet. Noel McPherson and Geoff Lucas both had good sailing results with many places going against their names, including a win for Geoff. Richard Thorpe and Narelle Derwent took out the remaining 4 places. The following scores showed a gentle spread. It was a busy day on the water, good to be out sailing.
Both Peter and Graham suffered collisions and tangles with other boats which unfortunately detracted somewhat to what could have been a very close contest for the podium.
We, all others, have to better judge when it’s best to tack. This occurred mostly at the top mark. When coming in on Port, sometimes it may have been wiser to gybe, rather than take out all the boats who are on Starboard.
Race winners were Phil Stevenson 3, Peter Burton 2, Graham Brown 2, Martin Thearle 1 and Geoff Lucas 1.
Phil Stevenson took the honours for the day to win 1st place on 16 points.
Peter Burton finished in 2nd place on 19 points.
Graham Brown finished in 3rd place with 23.5 points.
The Club Championship now has Graham Brown in front from Phil Stevenson and Martin Thearle.
Our next Sail day is Thursday 5th September for a Handicap Event.
