The 2022 Susan McAnna Memorial Trophy – 18 Sept 2022

Susan McAnna Regatta June 2022

NSW IOM GP Round 5 – Kogarah Bay Sailing Club

On Sunday 18th of September 2022, the Susan McAnna Memorial Trophy (IOM GP Round 5) was held at Kogarah Bay Sailing Club and hosted by Kogarah Bay Radio Yacht Club.  This event is held annually to celebrate the considerable contribution made by the late Susan McAnna to radio sailing, the NSWRYA and KBRYC.

The event attracted a great fleet of 16 boats including competitors from Newcastle, Lake Macquarie & Wollongong as well as Western NSW.

The weather gods decided to mix things up a bit with a tricky 0-15 knot WNW breeze that had many of the competitors shaking their heads as to where the breeze was coming from next!

These conditions were tailor-made for the “wind whisperer”, Paul Jones who dominated the event, winning 9 out of the 14 races. Brad Quiggan from Newcastle sailed very consistently to finish 2nd. Andrew McQuirter from Kogarah Bay, in one of his first IOM regattas sailed fantastically well to finish 3rd.

These events don’t happen by themselves so thanks very much to: Matthew McAnna for doing a great job as PRO, the “recovering” Owen Jarvis for doing the results and Ian, Neil & Ted from KBRYC for helping out.

The regatta was held in great spirits although I’m sure many skippers had to “bite their lips” at times given the testing conditions!
