DAC Results, Handicap Racing, Thu 4th May 2023

Dobroyd-RC-Lasers-20230504

Today was another successful Handicap Day. Twenty-one DAC Sailors came along to tests their skills under clear skies and with gentle breezes.

This Fleet set another record for starters for a Club day.

The wind from the South was a little fluky at times but settled in around 6 to 10 with the odd gust up to 20 Km/Hr, (3 to 6, gusts to 11 Knots).

“A” sails were called for to handle the day’s sailing, although one or 2 “B” ‘s had a brief look in.

We welcome a new Member to our Club. Rob Westaway has joined us sailing #370.

The day belonged to Narelle Derwent. Narelle used her Handicap to advantage to win the day’s racing with 2 firsts and 2 thirds. Twenty seven points was her winning score. Although her Handicap increased during the  day, Narelle still scored well with a win in the last Race. It was good to see the name Derwent back on the top of the list. Narelle’s brother Paul Derwent, who we sadly lost last year would have been watching her success with pride.

Noel McPherson had a very good day, most of his finishes were 5 or better, taking a second place in Race 7. Noel came a comfortable second place overall with a score of 31.5 points. Graham Brown endured a lengthy handicap bit still managed to work his way through the Fleet for a win and most finishes in the top group. Graham’s score of 35.5 gave him third place.

The following positions weren’t separated by that many points. The odd point or two was the difference right down the page.

Robin Tickner, Richard Thorpe, Judy Evans, Bruce Hilliard and Rob Westaway all scored one or two places each, together with those below.

The closeness of the Racing caused many very tight finishes. The Race Officers and scoring assistants had great difficulty picking the correct sail numbers at the finish line on a couple of occasions.

Race 1 saw four boats hit the line simultaneously. It was decided to call it a four way tie.

Race winners were Narelle Derwent 2, Graham Brown 1, Brendan Hones 1, Philip Hetherington 1, Ian Spencer 1 and Geoff Lucas 1.

Narelle Derwent took the honours for the day to win 1st place on 27 points.

Noel McPherson finished in 2nd place on 31.5 points.

Graham Brown finished in 3rd place also with 35.5 points.

The Club Championship now has Graham Brown in front from Noel McPherson and Brendan Hones.

Our next Sail day is Thursday 11th May for a Scratch Event.
